Inspired in part by the artist’s paternal grandmother and in part by a photograph of quilter, Hettie Barnes, and her granddaughter captured by Roland Freeman in 1976, the piece explores the metaphor of weaving to describe how family lives intertwine and thread together to make a unit. Kinship care is a common part of many Black families where young girls spend time bonding with older women through hair. The image floats in a sky like a celestial memory.
